Coveted

I drove past her house every morning, she was always there. She was beautiful, and I fell hopelessly in love with her.

She must have been over forty years old, but looked much younger. Probably high maintenance, but I didn't mind, when she was mine I would care for her, cherish her.

Most people would consider us an odd match, me being so much younger, but I wouldn't care what other people thought, I just had to have her, and I would, in time.

At night I dreamt about her, her curves, the proud way she stood.

I was filled with fear that someone else would love her too, I just had to do something, I had to be brave and ask the question.

Today, I would do it today.

I pulled to a stop outside her house, climbed out of the car and walked straight up to her, I felt an overwhelming urge to touch her, but decided it would be a shade forward and presumptuous, better to ask permission first, I just ogled her, almost drooling.

I walked around her, brushing against her as I did, I didn't mean to, I just couldn't help myself.

I walked up to the door and knocked timidly.

A moment or two later the door opened a few inches and the face of an old man appeared.

“Yes?” He asked me.

“I... I... h..hope you don't mind me asking sir,” I stammered, “but the Cortina on your driveway, would you possibly consider selling it?”

  1. Good buildup and twist at the end (though, I have to admit, I had to Google Cortina - figured it was a car, but I had to be sure).

    1. Thank you Clara. Cortinas are a very rare sight on our roads now, most of them went to the scrappers years ago, but there are still a few well-cared for or rebuilt ones, mostly seen at classic car shows these days.

  2. Ha, that was an awesome twist! You had me going right up until the end. Boys and cars… so true.

    1. Boy's toys Larry, if we can't own 'em, we can always imagine owning 'em, can't we?

  3. When I read "I pulled to a stop outside her house, climbed out of the car and walked straight up to her" I knew it was a car but that didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story at all. Fun piece Steve ^_^

    1. Thanks Helen, I did think some readers would guess where it was going. :-)

  4. Every man needs to have a favorite car. Mine is a toss up between the '64 Mustang and the '64 Corvette. So what year model Cortina is your favorite?

    1. Hi Stephen. There are many cars that I like. As for the Cortina, there were 5 models produced from the early 60's to the 1980's, and I have driven all of them over the years (I never actually owned any of them though) and my favourite was always the MK3, which was produced in the early 1970's. They were all just medium-sized family saloons really, but massively popular, the MK3, was roomy, good to drive, and apart from the under-powered 1300, had punchy engines, if I ever decided to own a classic car I think I would choose the MK3 Cortina over any other, even the classic sports cars.

If you would like to see some pics of Mk3 Cortinas you can see them on this link.

  5. Lol I was with the "woman" idea until he brushed around her but had no idea it was a car. Very nicely done. My nan had a bright orange cortina lol. We got rear ended by a mini whose bonnet almost ended up in the boot. The bloke didnt even get hurt and it was wholly his fault. The cortina hardly had a dent lol.

    1. Thanks Casey. Yeah, I remember that particular colour. I was once parked in a petrol station in a mk3 Cortina (A minicab I was driving at the time), and an idiot in an Alfa Romeo sports car swerved flashily in, and smashed straight into my front end, the Alfa was a right mess, the full corner gone, bonnet, wing, grille, lights...
The only damage to mine was a slightly twisted headlamp LOL.

  6. Thanks Marc, I guess he was a stalker in a way, just not the nasty kind. :-)

  7. Hahaha yes! Great twist! Very flirtatious and charming way to show one's love for a car, Steve! I love retro cars and often admire such parked outside somebody's house, thinking what it would be like to own such a vehicle.

    1. Thanks Cindy. The truth is, the cars of today are far more reliable, economical, and usually more comfortable and mod-con laden than the cars of yesteryear, but (imo) lack a lot of the character that the old ones had. Most people would probably choose another classic car over the MK3 Cortina, but it is a model that I always personally liked.

    2. Give me a muscle car to drive at least for a day and I'd be happy for a lifetime!

  8. I too was fooled right up to the point he brushed past her, but somehow I still didn't realize it was a car. Very well written!
I'm surprised that I didn't realize it was a car - my dad always said I should've been a boy as much as I liked cars, (I was quite a tomboy). I always wanted a red '65 Mustang convertible. Maybe that's still not out of the question...

    1. Thanks Deanna. Maybe some day you will own that Mustang, it's certainly a possibility. :-)

  9. You got me with that one, Steve. No way I thought his muse was anything other than a woman.

  10. I'm kind of relieved it was a car -- I was picturing a statue at first. If the car's really in that good shape, he's gonna get a flat "no", I'm sure!

    1. I never thought of the "her" being a statue Katherine, but now you mention it it does fit the story well.

You would probably be right about the refusal too, the old guy has probably owned the car from new, and taken really good care of it.
